Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, died on June 10, 2023, at the age of 81. Kaczynski was a mathematics prodigy who abandoned his academic career in 1969 to live a solitary life in a remote cabin in Montana. From 1978 to 1995, he sent mail bombs to universities, airlines, and other targets, killing three people and injuring 23 others. He was arrested in 1996 and pleaded guilty to four counts of murder and one count of carrying and using an explosive device to commit murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Kaczynski's motives for his bombing campaign were complex and have been the subject of much debate. He was a self-described anarchist who believed that modern technology was dehumanizing and destructive. He also believed that the Industrial Revolution had led to the destruction of the natural environment. His manifesto, "Industrial Society and Its Future," outlined his philosophy and his reasons for resorting to violence.
Kaczynski's death brings to an end one of the most notorious crime sprees in American history. His legacy is likely to be debated for years to come.
