The Earthquakes had a chance to equalize in the 89th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick of their own, but Cristian Espinoza's shot was saved by Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei.

The loss drops the Earthquakes to 3-5-4 on the season, while the Sounders improve to 5-3-4. The two teams will meet again on July 13 at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The Cascadia Cup is a trophy awarded to the winner of the annual competition between the Earthquakes, Sounders, and Portland Timbers. The Sounders have won the Cup four times in the past five years.

The Earthquakes will look to bounce back from their loss on Saturday when they travel to face the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday.
